The right of EEA and EU citizens to move freely in the UK ended on 31st December 2020, i.e., when the transition period for Brexit ended. This means that EEA nationals are subject to immigration controls that people from other countries have to undergo. There are certain exceptions, however. For example, Irish citizens can still move freely in the UK as per the Common Travel Area arrangements.

The EU Settlement Scheme was introduced to aid EEA nationals who wish to retain their legal immigration status in the UK post-Brexit. As per the scheme, your immigration status can be classified as either ‘settled’ or ‘pre-settled.’
EEA nationals who have been living in the country for five years at a stretch are eligible for the settled status and the pre-settled status if their stay was less than five years. You can apply for settled status if you continuously manage to live in the UK for five years.
As a settled or pre-settled EEA national in the UK, you and your family can live and work in the UK freely and can also leave and return as you wish. You can apply to become a British citizen once 12 months have gone by with a settled status, as can your family members. These include:
